Hon. Herbert C. Klein
Herbert C. Klein is enjoying a long and distinguished career in law, business, and politics. In New Jersey, Mr. Klein was a member of the General Assembly from 1972 to 1976, where he was the associate majority leader and chair of the majority caucus. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives during the 103rd United States Congress and served on the Banking (Financial Institutions) Committee, the Housing Committee, and the Science, Space and Technology Committee.
In the General Assembly, Mr. Klein wrote the law that created the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and was co-counsel on bond issue for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. In the Congress, he co-authored the Interstate Branch Banking Law in addition to other major banking legislation.
Mr. Klein has been a member of the Rutgers University Foundation Board of Overseers, the Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Association of Jewish Federations, and the New Jersey Israel Commission. He is a trustee of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and sits on the Chair’s Advisory Council of the National Democratic Institute. He is also a past president of the Beth Israel Hospital Board of Trustees and was part of the Rutgers University Board of Trustees.
He was as an official election monitor for votes in Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia as well as continues to champion bipartisan dialogue domestically. He has been an active litigator, with more than 1,000 cases before state and federal courts. Mr. Klein is also a partner and principal in numerous private investment real estate companies.
At Rutgers University, he has funded the Jacqueline Krieger Klein Endowed Director’s Chair in Neurodegeneration Research and enabled the establishment of the Herbert and Jacqueline Krieger Klein Alzheimer’s and Dementia Clinical Research and Treatment Center at the Brain Health Institute. He is a visiting associate at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University–New Brunswick.
Mr. Klein received his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, law degree from Harvard University, and LLM in taxation from New York University. He is admitted to the bar in New Jersey and Washington, DC.
